چکیده

One of the few general “theorems” of ecology is the statement that in a given habitat there can be no more species present than the number of limiting resources. Our aim is to examine several of the versions of this “theorem” present in the literature, to compare them and to consider the underlying assumptions and definitions so as to decide to what ecological situations the theorem is applicable. Firstly, we present three examples where the bald statement, “There can be no more species than resources” seems false, in order to illustrate the difficulty of deciding how many resources are present. Secondly, we review three versions of the theorem, point out their limitations and relate them to each other.

Colour Polymorphism Protects Prey Individuals and Populations Against Predation

Colour pattern polymorphism in animals can influence and be influenced by interactions between predators and prey. However, few studies have examined whether polymorphism is adaptive, and there is no evidence that the co-occurrence of two or more natural prey colour variants can increase survival of populations. Here we show that visual predators that exploit polymorphic prey suffer from reduce...

Observations on non-additive predation: birds and grasshoppers

Background: Classic predator–prey theory assumes that predatory mortality is additive with other sources of mortality, but predatory mortality can be non-additive. If predators preferentially kill individuals already ‘doomed’ from other mortality causes, then predation can be less than additive. If predators preferentially kill individuals more likely to survive, then predation can be greater t...

Trophic Level, Food Preference and Feeding Ecology of Rachycentron canadum (Linnaeus. 1766), in Hormuzgun province Waters (Northern Persian Gulf and Oman Sea)

The aim of this study was to assess the ecological factors associated with feeding by Rachycentron canadum (cobia) in the waters of Hormuzgan Province, Iran. Specimens were collected seasonally from Sep. 2014–Sep. 2015 from the Ferdows-1 survey ship and from landing areas in the city of Bandar Abbas. A total of 577 cobia were collected (340 male, 237 female) (20–161 cm Total length). Our result...

Reactions of hand-reared and wild-caught predators toward warningly colored, gregarious, and conspicuous prey

Recently there has been debate over the importance of innate avoidance of aposematic prey by predators, particularly birds. There is evidence that the predators have innate or unlearned, thus, inherited avoidance against certain colors, but whether there is any innate avoidance against gregariousness or conspicuousness is unclear. Previously predator behavior toward these characters of aposemat...

Predator hunting mode and habitat domain alter nonconsumptive effects in predator-prey interactions.

Predators can affect prey populations through changes in traits that reduce predation risk. These trait changes (nonconsumptive effects, NCEs) can be energetically costly and cause reduced prey activity, growth, fecundity, and survival. The strength of nonconsumptive effects may vary with two functional characteristics of predators: hunting mode (actively hunting, sit-and-pursue, sit-and-wait) ...

Are classical predator-prey models relevant to the real world?

Mathematical models of predator-prey population dynamics are widely used for predicting the effect of predators as biocontrol agents, but the assumptions of the models are more relevant to parasite-host systems. Predator-prey systems, at least in insects, substantially differ from what is assumed by these models. The main differences are: (i) Juveniles and adults have to be considered as two di...
